Second Summer

No jacket or hat was necessary as I soaked up some early evening rays at the harbor. It almost felt like a second summer, even though winter has just started. When I read other fashion blogs and see incredibly chic fashion bloggers frolicking in the snow, it reminds me of how pleasant the weather is in my area and makes me grateful. As a child, I remember living in a colder part of the country

Thakoon For Target - A Quick Fitting Room Review

Without going into detail about each piece, here are my fitting room photos of the six pieces I tried on from Thakoon's GO International collection at Target. I didn't find many of the designs to be flattering on my frame, as the pleats and full, loose shapes of the garments added bulk. I found the collection's skirts and dresses to have a more mature appeal than past GO collections. In

Shopping The Collection - Thakoon for Target

There's nothing quite like a quiet Sunday morning at Target, especially when Thakoon's collection for the GO International program is making its debut. Fortunately, the holiday crowds were missing and the Thakoon merchandise looked mostly untouched as I hurriedly walked in to examine the goods this morning. (The trick in my area is to go early, before church lets out and it gets busy.) This time

My Four-Legged Friend

Fashion Trend Guide readers, meet my new partner in crime - Russell. We went for a walk at the beach today in order to soak up some sunshine and enjoy the scenery. My new red-headed sidekick may be making an appearance every now and then in my photographs, since he loves being in front of the camera. If only I could train him to operate a camera! To keep the cool sea breeze at bay, I'm wearing

Fur In The Rain

I know that wearing fur in the rain isn't such a good idea, but a bad hair day combined with cooler temperatures and precipitation gave me motivation to cover my head with a vintage sable hat I found months ago at an antiques shop. I've been waiting patiently for four months to put this hat to use. I realize that wearing fur is a personal and controversial issue, but I'm not going to defend my

The Mod Clutch

I'm always on the lookout for cool accessories to breathe new life into my wardrobe. Sometimes all it takes is a new necklace, a pair of sunglasses, or a colorful clutch to brighten up an outfit. So when I learned about Sarah Morgan's line of eenamaria handbags, I knew they'd be the perfect mod-meets-sleek addition to my handbag collection. With names like Harlem Swing and Chelsea Boi, Sarah

10 Second Timer

Why am I jumping like a giddy child? Well I'm just having way too much fun with the self timer on my new digital SLR camera. Since the amount of daylight and sunshine we have in southern California is limited these days, I'm trying to take advantage of any opportunity that I can to use it outdoors and get to know its features. In addition to that, 3 packages just arrived at my doorstep and I

The F21 DIY

Rodarte's spidery knits continue to intrigue me, so when I came upon this crochet top on F21's website, I thought it would make an ideal knit for a Rodarte-inspired DIY session. Even though I possess Topshop's deconstructed Rodarte-esque sweater, sometimes I get overly enthusiastic about a trend and buy several versions of it. (This season, I went crazy over studs, dark florals, and plaid.) At

It's Vintage

A visit to the Rose Bowl Flea Market this past Sunday yielded a few great finds: three vintage shirtdresses and a comfortable pair of black knee-high boots. Fortunately, it didn't rain, and I was able to browse languidly amidst other vintage hunters. One of the dresses I found has a blue liberty print with very girly eyelet and corduroy trim. To tone down its Little House On The Prairie vibe and

Now it's Obama's Turn... What shall he wear to his Inauguration?

Richard James Savile Row look for evening
Sean John look for evening
Salvatore Ferragamo look for day
Nautica look for evening
A Tommy Hilfiger look for day
A Countess Mara tie

With all the focus on what Michelle wore or should wear, both during the campaign and her anticipated outfit for the inauguration, we can be forgiven for forgetting what the President-elect should wear. Luckily some of the world's most adored menswear designer are on the ball. WWD.com has exclusive sketches from designers ranging from Salvatore Ferragamo to Sean John. See the slideshoe below for all the sketches of day and evening looks plus some snazzy ties. My picks are above.

Red Legs

Two winters ago if you had asked me whether I'd wear plaid tights, the answer would have been a resounding "no." But this winter, I'm bored with skinny jeans and I'm reaching for bold tights, glossy leggings, and dresses more often. Especially after returning from Europe, I'm feeling inspired to layer tights under dressier pieces in my wardrobe. Things that I would've ordinarily reserved for

The Mervyn's Mix

As more and more retailers file for bankruptcy in this dismal economic climate, I'm finding myself shopping at liquidation sales this holiday season. Ads promising 60% to 80% off are hard to resist, especially when it involves clothing. JoAnn Fabrics, Mervyn's, Linens 'N Things, and Circuit City are just a few examples of stores that are closing in my area. While I haven't shopped at Mervyn's in

For The Holidays

If I could have anything for the holidays, I'd wish for world peace and a healthy, thriving economy. I know, they're not very original things to wish for. But since neither of these things are likely to happen, I'll make do with these four items that are on my holiday '08 wish list.Images from: topshop.com, americanapparel.net, urbanoutfitters.com, talullahtu.co.uk.Deconstructed knits are on my

Harborside

When I saw how violent the wind was today, I decided against wearing a floaty dress for practical reasons. So out came the wind-proof layers: bright pink tights underneath ripped jeans, a tunic under my motorcycle jacket, and my versatile new circle scarf from American Apparel. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions and gusts of sand (and hair) blowing into my eyes, I was able to test out my

Pretty Paisley

With today's outfit, I'm making use of another great find from Bebe - a diaphanous peasant dress that I scored on sale. As a shopaholic, I'm learning that one upside to the current economic woes are great sales and lots of current season overstock in stores where I normally don't make purchases. (Shopping hint - shop often and during the weekdays for the best bargains.) This dress originally cost

Holiday Shopping - 5 Gifts Under $25

Writing holiday gift guides isn't particularly my forte, but this year, despite the bleak economy, I got into the holiday shopping mood a bit earlier than usual. In fact, I'm just about done with my holiday shopping. Having shopped at a variety of places including malls, discounters, big box retailers, and outlets this December, I've gained inspiration for a mini gift guide and I've decided to

2009 Fashion Trends

I was recently asked to be a guest speaker for a Fashion Trend Forecasting class at a community college. Since trend forecasting has always been my area of interest in the fashion industry, I was honored have the opportunity to share my experiences with the class. As part of my presentation, I constructed a trend board to illustrate what I think will be important trends in 2009. So what should

The location: Fry's Electronics. The occasion: shopping for stuff I don't need. The outfit: a very Gucci-esque paisley print maxi dress from Bebe. The verdict: I'm potentially overdressed but very comfortable. The icing on the cake: The dress originally cost $149, but I bought it on sale for $39.

Here's the second installment of my San Francisco travel feature. 8:45 am - Walk to Mama's on Washington Square, San Francisco's famous breakfast eatery, and stand in line for an hour before getting seated. The Cozy Craftsman

On my way to a street festival this weekend, I passed by a captivating mid-century Craftsman cottage and thought its chipped paint and dilapidated yet cozy porch would make an ideal backdrop for an impromptu photo of my grunge and biker-inspired ensemble. The studded bag is an oldie but goodie. I've probably had it for several years, and now that studs are adorning just about everything, it's

Brit Speak

So call me an Anglophile - I'm an American who loves to wear plaid, drink tea, snack on scones, and shop at Topshop. Some of my favorite indie rock bands are from England. Furthermore, I devour endless British fashion magazines, stalk the websites of many a British high street store, and I adore Susie Bubble. I secretly think many British accents sound cool. What should I wear? - The question uttered by women across the world countless times. If you think you have it bad, try being Michlle Obama deciding what to wear for the most historical evening in American history and the proudest moment of your life. As daunting as it sounds, at least she has a handful of accomplished designers clamouring to design her something to wear. Installment 1 - A Day In San Francisco

Ever since I first visited San Francisco in 2002, I became enthralled with the city's Victorian architecture, enticing water views, and non-conformist attitudes. Each trip that I make back to the city reveals new and engaging activities and undiscovered treasures. During my latest trip last month, I devoted some time browsing various thrift and vintage shops along Polk Street. So without further

Window Shopping At Wet Seal

During my recent trip to San Francisco, I captured a few store window photos from Wet Seal's display at Westfield San Francisco Centre. The mall was unusually quiet and empty, which was a pleasant surprise, as it was much easier to shoot. I almost forgot I had taken these photos, and decided to post them before they become irrelevant. Some recurring trend themes in this display include: layered

Black Friday. The one day of the year that I promise myself I will not join the hordes of frenzied shoppers in the quest for sales and deals. I figure that I spend enough time shopping around the year, so why not let everybody else get trampled, fight over parking spaces, navigate through the crowds, and wait in long lines? For me the perfect day after Thanksgiving consists of sleeping in late,

Fur Real

After watching several episodes of The Rachel Zoe Project, I've developed an affinity for fur and faux fur outerwear. Maybe it's the effortless manner in which Rachel Zoe wears her oversized fur vests and coats on her small frame and the classic glamour that they impart. While she no doubt wears the real thing, I'm content to opt for either cheap chic acrylic versions or inexpensive vintage flea

Countdown To Christmas For Thakoon

Thakoon Panichgul's resort-like collection for Target, which (oddly enough) debuts on December 25th, is yet another reason for me to look forward to the holiday season. While I personally try to avoid the malls and big box retailers towards the end of December, this collection is more than enough motivation to get me to brave the holiday crowds. (But then again the weak economy might help to keep

Dressed For Dinner

Even though it still feels like summer in southern California, it's time for me to start thinking about my holiday dinner and party outfits. Splurging On Studs

It's no secret that I'm a fan of boots. They're my preferred form of footwear year round. (Unlike many southern Californians, I even wear boots in the summer instead of flip flops.) I'd be embarrassed to count how many pairs I own and reveal that number. So whatever that number may be, it just increased by one more pair with this lovely addition to my collection. Take a Leaf Out of Her Style Book: Garcelle Beauvais

Garcelle Beauvais at a recent event earlier this year.
Garcelle Beauvais arrives at the Spring 2009 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week held at Smashbox studios on Sunday October 12th in Culver City, California.
Garcelle Beauvais arrives to the premiere of Lionsgate's My Best Friend's Girl on September 15, 2008 at The Arclight in Hollywood, California.
Garcelle Beauvais at the Vogue and Step Up Women's Network fashion event at Bally on October 28, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California.

Cool temperatures require that we cover up from head-to-toe or at least toe-to-high waist. Take a leaf out of Garcelle Beauvais' style book and invest in some classic wide leg, high-waisted pants. They are still very much "in" this season and give a polished look a laid back elegance. Note how Garcelle keeps things simple with simple accessories and classic make-up. For further inspiration also look to the pioneer of the wide leg pants, Katherine Hepburn.

My Picks!

Whether you prefer high-waisted or low-rise, wide leg pants give any look instant sophistication. Whether it's to work or on a hot date, keep your pants w ide. Vogue Tradition: First Lady to be on the Cover?

I know many of you are still on cloud nine following Tuesday night's election results. It still seems so surreal. Now that we have a new and greatly improved president and first family waiting in the wings, the talks must be underway for Michelle Obama to cover Vogue magazine. Traditionally, the December issue features the new first lady (and in some cases the first kids). According to a spokesperson from the fashion magazine:

"Starting with Eleanor Roosevelt, it's been a long-standing tradition to photograph the new first lady. So needless to say, we are very interested in working with Mrs. Obama. Precisely how is still being discussed."

If Michelle accepts the offer she'll become only the fourth black non-model woman to become a Vogue covergirl. Former first lady and Democratic senator Hillary Rodham Clinton also appeared on the front page of the December 1998 edition. Can't wait to see Michelle strike a pose!

If the European high street stores are any indication of trends to come Stateside, then I have a hunch that sequins will continue to remain strong as a form of embellishment on dresses, belts, party tops, and even trousers. Even though it's about 25 degrees warmer than it was during my time in Europe, I'm still in fall mode, wearing beanies and layers. Today's look is a nod to the grunge scene of my youth, with my new Anya Hindmarch for Target tote thrown in for a touch of glam. The boots with faux fur trim are from H&M, and I just spotted them in the November edition of Elle. They're surprisingly comfortable, and

The Shopping List

Whilst in Europe, I bought much more than I was expecting, despite the poor exchange rates. Someone has to stimulate economies of other countries, right? Looking good from head-to-toe is a necessity for a night out on the town but that doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune on your outfit. Take a leaf out of Keri Hilson's book and splurge on a key items such as a statement skirt and/or killer heels. Save money on your top, jewelry and purse. There's nothing more elegant than a plain and simple tank top/wife beater paired with a luxurious skirt. See the 3 looks above for some inspiration.

As I absorbed the local culture of Denmark's beautiful capital city, I was amazed by how chic all of the women looked as they expertly rode their bicycles about the city. Even with the cold wind blowing and light rainfall, they managed to somehow look sophisticated and pulled-together. I wish I knew their secret! Equally fascinating to me was the charming Danish architecture throughout the

In Europe...

After visiting Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Edinburgh in the past week, I have concluded that not only does Stockholm have some of Europe's most beautiful residents, but it also has the most inspiring store window displays. The photo above was taken at Souk, where yours truly went on a mini shopping spree at the large Topshop boutique. I indulged myself in the oversized bow headband trend and

Living Out Of A Suitcase

I'm still traveling in Europe, hence the lack of updates. I promise to post a few store window photos and some travel information in the near future!

I'm 'Holm!

I'm currently exploring the charming, pristine streets of Stockholm. After stocking up on my favorite denim brand at Weekday, I navigated the Swedish shopping scene and explored the medieval walkways of Gamla Stan (Old Town), pictured above. I hope to capture some store window photos and displays in the coming days, and I'm so excited to be here! It's a stunningly beautiful country with more

Window Shopping At Zara - Layered Looks

My latest trip to Zara uncovered a lot of Gucci and Anna Sui-inspired boho looks, particularly embroidered tunics, diaphanous paisley blouses, fringed boots, and cropped vests. On my way out of the store, I couldn't help but snap photos of these two mannequins with their layered looks. I was very inspired by this window display!

'Cause Babies Should Be Stylish Too..

Kim Porter and her twin daughters, D’Lila Star and Jessie James, pose for the latest issue of Baby Couture

Check out Kim Porter and her cute daughters in the latest issue of Baby Couture. Diddy is also featured in the photo shoot. The couple (?) and their 22 month old twins showcase the latest trends in baby fashion - must be nice to have access to the world's greatest designers at your fingertips at such a young age!

Toting The New Anya Bag

Target continues to roll out stylish collections by big name designers faster than I can say masstige. Next up this month is a line of structured handbags and clutches by Anya Hindmarch and chic footwear by Sigerson Morrison. Since both lines were supposed to be available on October 12, I was filled with glee when I saw the Anya Hindmarch bags at my store today. I've had my eye on the black

Shopping The Saunders Collection...Again

It's no secret that I love Target's GO International designer collaborations. Accordingly, I went back to try on a few more pieces from the Jonathan Saunders collection that looked interesting, including the kaleidoscope tee in ebony and the body-hugging ponte skirt. I was disappointed in the cheap, plastic-y texture of the graphics on the tee, as it reminded me of those iron-on graphics from the

Color Complex

Taraji P. Henson arrives at the Black Enterprise All-Star gathering celebrating Oscar week on February 20, 2008 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Mel B spotted in Los Angeles, California earlier this year.
Meagan Good with Tulle Coats at Boost Mobile at Marquee Lounge on January 21, 2008 in Park City, Utah.
Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton pose during the official launch of the Sydney Theatre Company's '2009 Main Stage Season' at the Wharf Restaurant on September 1, 2008 in Sydney, Australia.

Alas, fall is coming. I'm not sure I'm ready yet. Try brightening up the impending cooler days with a bold, colored coat/jacket. Rainbow inspired outerwear is so easy to find. Every online boutique and high street store are offering an array of show-stopping hues. Just be sure to pick the color that best matches your complexion - not everyone can get away with sunshine yellow.

My Picks!

Left to right: Bethany Wool Blend Coat, $34.80, www.forever21.com; Double-breasted princess coat by Miu Miu, $1320, www.net-a-porter.com; Hooded Button Detail Coat, $130, www.topshop.com; Kinicki Coat, $328, www.fcusbuymail.com
Left to right: French Connection Square Button Jacket, $252.42, www.asos.com; Ruffle Cuff Pea Coat by Juicy Couture, $398, www.shopbop.com; Petal Bow Neck Jacket, $117.20, www.asos.com; Pique Wool-Blend Coats, $89.50, www.oldnavy.com

I've had my mind set on a red coat ever since I saw my sister's red coat from Mango, UK last year. Other colors I'm drawn to are blue and fuschia. Don't overdo this look by adding other bright colors to the mix - let the coat speak for itself. Pair it with neutral colors like black, dark denim or even white.

Fitting Room Adventures - Jonathan Saunders For Target - A Review

After anxiously awaiting the arrival of the boldly-patterned Jonathan Saunders collection for GO International, I finally got my hands on some of the goods today. The majority of the collection was freshly arranged on the racks, and very few shoppers in the store made for a quiet and unusually pleasant Target shopping experience. At times like these, I consider myself lucky that I live in an area

Shopping The Delia*s Fall '08 Catalog

As I perused my new dELiA*s catalog this evening, there were a few items that made their way onto my ever-expanding wish list. I'm currently drawing inspiration for cold weather attire from the outdoorsy, college prep-inspired dEliA*s catalog images. And just in time for my trip abroad, where temperatures will be about 30 degrees cooler than in southern California.Pictured above: 1 - Kaitlyn

Jazmine Sullivan

You'd have to have been living under some kinda two tonne rock not to of at least heard the track "Need U Bad" by new J Records artist Jazmine Sullivan. Her debut album "Fearless" reached number 6 on the billboard charts selling 65, 539 units in its first week.

"It’s been a long time since a debut artist has brought as much drama” cites USA Today’s 3-star review, while People’s 3.5-star Critic’s Choice review declares that FEARLESS is the "African-American answer to Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.” Elle adds to the critical praise by stating the 21 year old Philly native “swings deep and wide like Sarah Vaughn, tears it up like Mary J., and emanates the lady-preacher seriousness of Lauryn Hill.”

Join the revolution and check out Jazmine when she hits a town near you. Visit her official site and MySpace page for more details.

The Rabbit's Out Of The Hat

Even though I'll be traveling to the U.K. soon, I could not resist buying this adorable rabbit T-shirt from the Topshop U.S. site. Their whimsical Wonderland collection with its poufy skirts, harlequin prints, floppy bows, and Alice In Wonderland-inspired graphics still appeals to me as much as it did when I recently wrote about it. I'm excitedly counting down the days until I'll be shopping at

Couture with Heart

Serena Williams' design for Stuart Weitzman.
Joy Bryant, Jada Pinkett and Janet Jackson also designed a pair for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Who knew Hollywood had such untapped fashion talent? Stuart Weitzman annually asks some of the hottest celebrities to design shoes for the Stuart Weitzman Annual Celebrity Shoe Auction. It’s an online auction, so anyone can bid! September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Stuart Weitzman is doing its part to attract publicity in order to raise money to support ovarian cancer research. The celebrity designers include Serena Williams, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Joy Bryant, Eva Longoria Parker, Janet Jackson, and Jessica Alba. The shoes also come with an autographed glossy photo of the star. Head to Stuart Weitzman's special site to start bidding - prices start at a mere $200!

The Floral Phenomenon

My latest cold weather fashion fixation is patterned tights. Having already purchased fishnets, pointelle tights, spider web tights, lace leggings, and red plaid tights, I thought I'd give my new floral tights a try. As I put them on, I had the feeling they might elicit dirty looks, stares, or otherwise unwelcome attention from the less fashion-oriented folks in my casual, flip flop-infested

Trend On The Rise - Tulip Skirts

I've recently developed an affinity (no, make that an obsession) for tulip skirts. So what is it about them that draws me in? I adore the ultra feminine, nipped-in waists contrasted against full volume in the hip and thigh area. While not the most flattering silhouette, it's a practical one for days when body-con is too constricting or revealing. For me, the trick is to make sure the skirt is a

Event Alert - The Vintage Society Trunk Show

For vintage enthusiasts and people like me who adore super stylish Beth and her blog The Vintage Society, I highly recommend attending her trunk show, which is taking place in Los Angeles this Saturday. Given Beth's sharp eye for vintage garments and her wonderful talent for styling them, I am sure there are gems to be found. If you're in the area, you should definitely check it out!Saturday,

Cash, Check or Charge?

Cash: Perlina Croc Wallet, $7.50, www.forever21.com
Check: Reptile-Print Clutches, $19.50, www.oldnavy.com
Charge: Isa Lizard Emboss, $295, www.loreleinyc.com

Croc clutches are all the rave right now but don't be predictible and buy a bright red clutch. Other colors to consider would be sunlight yellow, plum purple or sea aqua (like Selita Ebanks in a recent post). If your on a budget, the "cash" or "check" options are right up your alley but for those of you with a little more money to burn opt for this gorgeous Isa Lizard Emboss clutch. It's perfect with a cocktail dress or jeans!

Take A Peek - Jonathan Saunders for Target Images

My constant checking of Target's website has finally paid off - they have released images of the Jonathan Saunders GO International collection. Having seen several of the images floating around the internet for the past few weeks, it only left me wanting to see the entire collection even more. I unsuccessfully searched the web for photos and reviews of the collection by NYC shoppers who got to

Black Cat Attack

Since today was the official first day of fall, why not mark the occasion with some gloomy Goth-inspired pieces? It seems that all of the dark, austere fall '08 trends reflect my mood perfectly these days. My new spider web tights helped to fend off the cool fall breeze while giving a nod to the dark side, and my houndstooth tee and distressed cutoffs honor recent runway looks by Marc Jacobs

Hair Stories: Rock It Out

Rihanna, Tamyra Gray and Sylvia Rhone punk out their short crops to give them each a new look.
1. Kizzi Stay-Put Hair Pomade, $9.50, www.carolsdaughter.com; 2. Moisturizing Silkening Liquid-Gel by Miznai, $13.96, www.just4beauty.com; 3. Bumble and bumble Sumo Wax, $21.95, www.folica.com; 4. Color Brilliance SilKomb 50, $4.99, www.sallybeauty.com; 5. Tool Science Nano Silver Paddle Brush, $6.99, www.sallybeauty.com; 6. Dirt Texturizing Paste by Jonathan, $14, www.sephora.com; 7. Elucence Extended Moisture Repair Treatment, $15.99, www.culmart.com; 8. L'Oreal Color Rays in Red, $10.99, www.drugstore.com

Long hair is so overrated. Yes, it's versatile but there's nothing more confident than a woman who can wear her hair short with confidence. For those of you already sporting a cropped hairstyle you might consider trying the spiked looks above. Rihanna's hairstlye is especially fabulous - it has a hard edge but is soft enough to wear on an everyday basis. The products above can help you achieve these looks. The most important is hair wax and the stay-put pomade. If you want your style to last all day, carry the pomade/wax with you so you can retouch when needed.
