Cash, Check or Charge?

Cash: Sasha Gathered Bow Clutch, $24.95, www.dsw.com
Check: High Fashion Python Print Clutch with Bow, $69, www.endless.com
Charge: Valentino Satin bow clutch, $795, www.net-a-porter.com

I've been eyeing this Valentino satin clutch for a long time now but who, pray tell, has $800 to spend on a clutch? In these hard economic times I realised that it was high time for another "Cash, Check or Charge" post. I Like Her Style's mantra is, "if you can't beat 'em, you don't have to join 'em." So if you can't spend $800 on a clutch, don't. There are two economically friendly alternatives featured above at just $25 and $69... Enjoy!!

Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton at Columbia Pictures Premiere of '2012' at Regal Cinemas LA Live on November 03, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.
Thandie Newton was radiant at the "2012" movie premiere last month wearing a Prabal Gurung dress. When you wear something as elegant as this you don't need much else to make the look complete. Thandie opts for a statement ring and show-stopping red lips. If you need a bag to hold all your essentials, as most of us do, a classic and simple clutch will do. Don't forget vertigo heels and you're good to go!

Steal Thandie's Style

Dress: Mazerine Dress by DVF, $255, www.shopbop.com
Shoes: Carlos by Carlos Santana Privilege, $110, www.piperlime.com
Ring: Sterling Silver Marcasite Mother-of-Pearl Ring, $39.99, www.target.com
Lipstick: Jungle Red, $24, www.narscosmetics.com

Thandie Newton is the epitome of style and eloquence. Stealing her style will never fail you. If you can get away with it, don the bright, jungle red lipstick with the DVF dress. If not, don't fear. This post will help you figure out what shade of red is perfect for you. Where a dress like this for your next birthday soiree or a first date with that special guy. ;)

The In & Out of '09 Trends

While standing in an unusually long line at Wet Seal today, I had some time to make some observations and ponder fashion trends of 2009. With mild hopes of purchasing two pairs of floral leggings that I didn't need, I waited in line for a couple of minutes. During this time, I grew impatient, and entertained myself by slightly cringing as I watched a teenage shopper try on a fedora with a

In With the New Year

In my recent quest for the ideal New Year's Eve outfit, I've persistently browsed the new arrivals on Forever 21's website almost daily for party-appropriate pieces. I view the last day of the year as the perfect opportunity to be bold with prints, texture, accessories, and makeup. Not sure what to wear, but want to make a statement? I'm undecided as to what I'll be wearing, but I'm inspired by

Don't Bother Santa, He's Surfing

I'm not much of a holiday person, but this year, I decided to do something I've always wanted to do - construct and decorate a gingerbread house (using a kit). Perhaps my next attempt will involve some baking. Thanks to J.V. for your engineering and creative skills for helping to make this happen! In an effort to avoid the mall crowds, maintain my exercise regimen, and enjoy the sunny weather, I

December '09 Store Window Style

As the year comes to an end, I'm cleaning out my closet to create more space, setting new short and long term personal goals, and reviewing some of favorite store window photos. In the meantime, here are nine of my favorite store window photos from the month of December, all shot in the Los Angeles

Rodarte for Target - A Review

After weeks of anticipation, I braved my local Target this afternoon for a look at Rodarte's efforts for the latest GO International collection the day before the official debut. Fortunately, the store had a large selection, with most sizes still on the racks. Unfortunately, the lace tights and knee socks were nowhere to be found. Here's what the racks looked like at about 2pm...After a quick

Trend On The Rise - Chain Details

If you're suffering from an overdose of studs as embellishments, then the recent proliferation of chains might be a suitable alternative. Equally as tough as studs, they make quite the statement when added to your favorite tee, belt, pair of boots, or handbag. The great thing about chains is that if you're considering a DIY project, they're easy and inexpensive to add with the help of either some

Potatoes and Polka Dots

My recent fondness for food photography doesn't mean this is turning onto a food & fashion blog, however, I delight in documenting meals that I thoroughly enjoy, so food photos may make more appearances on Fashion Trend Guide. Today's delicious lunch at one of my preferred local eateries consisted of a vegetable frittata, roasted potatoes, and biscuit. It was more than enough to fuel a short but

Have you "booted" up yet? If not, you'd better hurry, the weather has taken a nasty turn for the worst. Safely tucked away until next season are my ballet flats and sandals. Out have come my uggs, sneakers and boots. I'd like to think that I'm ready for the worst of it but I do, however, need a leather, flat boot to wear with my sweater dresses and skinny jeans. I've opted for Steve Madden's slouch "Cybul" boot (pictured above).
It's true. A girl can never have too many heels, but she must also keep a trusty pair of flats by her side. If you just can't do without a heel they're plenty of low/kitten-heeled boots in stores such as Aldo and online at www.piperlime.com.

Ardently Awaiting the Holidays

As invites to holiday events roll in, it's time to start thinking about what to wear. Instead of stressing about gift buying, travel plans, and cooking, I tend to place a strong emphasis on the wardrobe aspect of the season. A Weekend of Food

In addition to consuming a fair share of mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn bread over Thanksgiving weekend, I succeeded at my one goal for the four-day time period - not to go shopping or buy anything other than food. With the holiday party season fast approaching, I've been on the lookout for fun, on-trend dresses. I've become slightly bored with the floral strapless, full-skirted styles that I stocked up on this summer. Right now I'm drawn to solid colors and anything with cutouts, multiple straps, and a sleek body-hugging silhouette. While browsing Bebe's website last night, I came upon these three

Feelin' Green

On a whim, I decided to purchase some green nail polish last night from Forever 21. Admittedly, I didn't have high expectations on the quality, as I typically don't get more than a day or two of wear before my manicures begin to chip. Michelle Obama is Honored by Glamour

December's issue of Glamour will honor 12 women as "Woman of the Year." Popular icons that have overcome serious challenges or given back to society are recognized by the fashion magazine. Among the winners are Maya Angelou, Rihanna, Serena Williams, Susan Rice and, of course, Michelle Obama.

The First Lady is interviewed by guest writer Katie Couric, and she gives this great advice to women still looking for love...

"Cute's good. But cute only lasts for so long. Then it's 'Who are you as a person?' Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul. When you're dating a man, you should always feel good."

You can see her full answer in the video snippet below, taken from the full interview.

As much as I complain about the weather still being warm here in southern California, I think the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Spotted in the window display at LF in Santa Barbara - these Ashish for Topshop look alike leopard print wedges. Janelle Monae featured in Vogue

Janelle Monae will be featured in Vogue's November issue. The eccentric songstress will be showing off George Esquivel's unique shoes. Here is the blurb from the article:

"It's hard not to get ideas when I'm meeting with Gwen [as in Stefani] and the Killers," says George Esquivel. "My work evolves by designing for people." Since 1994, the Southern Californian has been crafting custom shoes, and even with an ever-expanding client list, the majority of his footwear is made to order by hand in his Buena Park studio.

Though they're fashioned out of the same Italian leather used by Louis Vuitton, his boots and oxfords are unique in their colors and burnishes, which Esquivel still does himself. "It's a punk attitude," says the designer, whose wares were first noticed by his fellow music scenesters in the nineties. "I'm not a guy who grew up on the East Coast wearing suits." So not proper, but for Esquivel wearers, just perfect.

It's not often enough that store window displays offer me inspiration for putting together new outfits while I'm out and about shopping. The Blitzi Boot

In true Steve Madden form, they've created a version of the Isabel Marant studded ankle boot I recently spotted in Santa Barbara. It's called Blitzi, retails for $189.95, and comes in either black or brown suede. There are two minor differences from the originals, though. If you look closely, you'll see that unlike the originals, the heel is synthetic and slightly less cone-shaped. For a truly

Amelle Berrabah

Sugababe Amelle Berrabah performs at BBC2's Music Show ‘Sound’ at Spittlefield Market in London, England wearing a Denim Jumpsuit.
If you thought Destiny's Child had it's ups and downs that was nothing compared to the British group Sugababes. Since it's inception in 1998, the all girl group has been through three line-up changes. The most recent has left not one original band member in the group! That hasn't stopped their flow though. The girls are in the midst of a relaunch that includes a whole new sound and provocative new image to boot. Pictured above is North African (Moroccan) member Amelle Berrabah. She joined the group in 2005 replacing Mutya Buena. She recently shaved the side of her head to give herself an edgier look. I'm loving this Liquorish jumpsuit on her (see below.) Roll the legs up like Amelle to give the outfit a fresh spin.

Brush Your Shoulders Off!

Beyonce leaving Movida Nightclub in London, UK on May 26th, 2009
Rihanna arrives at the Balmain Pret-a-Porter show as part of the Paris Womenswear Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 on October 1, 2009 at Intercontinental Paris Grand Hotel in Paris
Halle Berry arriving at the Shangahi Film Festival, June, 2009
Ciara arrives at the BBC Radio 1 studios on April 23, 2009 in London, England
Beyonce leaving dinner at the Waverly Inn, New York in June, 2009

Winter is about to hit us so now is the time to buy summer trends at bargain prices. The Balmain Jacket craze shows no signs of dying down so grab yourself an original (or a budget-friendly inspired version). Net-a-Porter currently sells the originals but you can also find "knock-offs" at your favorite stores such as Topshop in the UK or Shopbop.com here in the US. Beyonce and Ciarahave championed this look by pairing their 80's / Michael Jackson inspired jackets with skinny jeans. Or make like Rihanna and add a little volume down below. Either way, these power jackets will take you well into 2010.

My Picks!

Left to right: Short Extended Shoulder Jacket, $135, www.topshop.com; Cotton-blend tuxedo jacket by Balmain, $3805, www.net-a-porter.com; White army-style jacket by Balmain, $3564, www.net-a-porter.com; Crystal-embellished canvas jacket by Balmain, $6389.60, www.net-a-porter.com
Left to right: ASOS Power Shoulder Tux Blazer, $113.37, www.topshop.com; Ruffle Peak Jacket by Robert Rodriguez, $495, www.shopbop.com; Blade Runner Jacket by Elizabeth and James, $425, www.shopbop.com; Button Detail Denim Jacket by Queen's Look, $85.50, www.yesstyle.com

Ranging from $85 to $6000+, now is the time to buy one of these amazing jackets. Winter may be closing in, but buy one on sale and wear it for the next five years. Every fashionista needs a powerful blazer in their wardrobe and now is the cheapest time to buy one. If you want the real thing be prepared to pay at least $3000 - and that's a bargain! My favorite is the tuxedo blazer from Topshop. At only $135, it's a fail safe investment.

Each time I visit Asos, I immediately check their new arrivals section, then I inevitably get sucked into the endless vortex of on-trend, affordable clothing and accessories that they carry. Since my chances of scoring a

Cuz You've Been Nighttiming Baby

Although I enjoy living where I live, for me, the biggest downfall of being in a beach town equates to a casual dress code, even at the swankest bars, lounges and restaurants. So you can imagine that I don't draw much inspiration for going-out outfits from the people I see around town, and I often feel like I'm overdressed. Case in point...Two weekends ago (for a night at a fancy lounge/bar), I

Random Things This Week

I've always got a lot of things (and thoughts) on my fashion to-do list. Whether it's a new site to inspect, a stylish must-have item that I want to purchase, or just something I've seen that's inspiring, sometimes I just have to jot such things down in a notebook. So why not also share them on my blog? Here are a few things on my mind this week:* I've been searching high and low for the perfect

Consolation Prizes

Finally, a slight chill in the air today allowed me to break out one of my new transitional summer-to-fall jackets. When I initially spied this faded denim motorcycle jacket last month at San Francisco Centre's Wet Seal, I scooped it up without thinking about how I'd style it. Little did I know how versatile it would be. Later that night, I wore it out to dinner over H&M's landscape print

Forever Fashion

Many thanks to the folks at Forever 21, who included a photo of me on the Forever 21 Flickr page as part of the Summer '09 Street Style feature. As much as I read the Forever 21 blog, and since I shop and spend quite excessively at Forever 21, it feels great to be recognized by them, especially as I'm wearing their Shibuya Mon Amour bunny tank top and Wang-inspired fringe booties in the photo

Dress Code

It's that time of year again when my birthday is on the horizon and I envision what I'll be doing to celebrate, where I'll be, who I'll be hanging out with, and most importantly, what I'll be wearing. As a clothes horse, I probably place too much significance on the "what I'll be wearing" aspect of the equation, but what I'm wearing directly affects how I feel, and for my birthday, I certainly

Sweaty

In protest of the heat wave we're experiencing in southern California, I'm wearing sweatpants (yes, sweatpants) with a boyfriend blazer. It's not exactly appropriate attire for weather that's edging towards 80 degrees, however, I'm more than ready for fall's cool breezes and somewhat chilly evenings. While many people don't see sweats as acceptable everyday attire, I'm still slightly intrigued by

Vintage Knowledge

This week I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Melody Fortier's The Little Guide to Vintage Shopping. As someone who recently began to enjoy shopping at flea markets and secondhand shops, I found the book to be extremely helpful. Unlike many other books in the Fashion/Style genre that I've read, I think this one is intelligently written, and the author clearly has expert knowledge of

Mattel Gets Ethnic...

...And it's about time! Mattel announced today their introduction of an all new, permanent Black Barbie doll line. The new dolls have features that more closely resemble those of Black people. That means fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinct cheekbones and "curlier" hair. The So In Style line, or S.I.S, features Kara, Trichelle and Grace who are three best friends in tune with fashion, fun and music. You can click here to learn more about each doll.

Each doll features its own unique personality and style and reflects one of three various skin tones - dark chocolate, milk chocolate and caramel. The line also features a mentoring theme and each doll comes with her own little sister. The little dolls are called Kianna, Courtney and Janessa. The big and little dolls hope to inspire mentoring in the black community (and all communities for that matter). Tell me if you like the dolls or not. My only gripe is the hair. I wish one of them could have had a more "natural" look but hey, this is progress! I wish these dolls were around when I was growing up. I LOVED to dress them up!

Five New Finds

I've been going out on the town more frequently the past few months, and for a girl who loves to get dressed up, this is good news. I'm oddly pleased to reveal that I haven't repeated an outfit yet (hey, it may sound diva-like, but it's a small world, and I don't want to be caught in the same look twice). On the other hand, I'm actually a bit ashamed to admit that there are still items in my

Goapele Covers Diablo Magazine...

Goapele is on the cover of the San Francsico East Bay magazine "Diablo." The songtress discusses her new album Milk and Honey and new business ventures including a nightclub and clothing boutique. Here's a snippet:

Born in Oakland in 1977, Goapele (pronounced gwah-puh-LAY, which means “to go forward” in her grandmother’s Setswana dialect) is the daughter of an exiled South African political activist father and a New York–born Jewish mother. Her parents married in Kenya, then moved to the East Bay.

“Music and politics were integrated into my upbringing from a very young age. A lot of my family is from South Africa, and during my childhood, there was a rich South African community in the Bay Area,” she says. “There were lots of parties where people would break into singing a cappella or playing conga drums.”

Don't Mock The Croc

By the time my Christopher Kane for Topshop items arrived today via the U.S. Postal Service, I was so excited that the current heat wave we're experiencing in southern California ceased to annoy me, and I immediately changed into the (sold out) croc tee and eyelet peep-toes in order to make it to my dinner reservation on time. Admittedly the outfit isn't creative, but in the interest of time and

Fall '09 Window Shopping

Recent shopping excursions in Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara have resulted in some mildly inspiring store window photos, five of which I've decided to share.Although fall has officially begun, the stifling heat here in southern California still dictates summer-y attire. As someone who prefers cool weather (since it offers more opportunities to layer), I certainly appreciate cool fall evenings.

Feeling Floral

When I'm traveling, practicality always dictates my wardrobe choices. You probably won't catch me in five inch heels, cumbersome dresses, or impractical pencil skirts when I'm out exploring or sightseeing. Instead, I opt for casual, comfortable clothing such as sneakers, skinnies, and cozy knits. While I've got a soft spot for high heels, I've come to accept that they just aren't worth the pain

The Scent Of Bebe

Upon my return home from San Francisco on Friday evening, I was pleasantly surprised to see that a package from Bebe had arrived. You may have seen the recent eye-catching Bebe fragrance ads featuring a striking, pale redhead wearing absolutely nothing. Well I opened up the bag and caught a whiff of the new Bebe scent. I've always been extremely picky when it comes to the perfumes that I wear. I

SF Highlights

It's always refreshing to get out of town for a change of scenery. Last week's absence from the blog gave me the chance to explore and enjoy northern California and my favorite American city - San Francisco. The scenic (and long) drive through pastoral areas affords great views of hillsides dotted with abandoned farmhouses and grazing cows. I finally visited the Hearst Castle, with its sprawling

Five For Fall '09

What's fall without new items to update the wardrobe? Right now, platform booties, anything adorned with sequins, and playful party-worthy pieces are on my style radar. This week I'll be traveling and doing some serious shopping. I'm looking forward to: examining Rachel Roy's wares at Macy's, shopping the new arrivals in the Divided line at one of the biggest/best H&M locations, and browsing the

Anna Sui For Target Fitting Room Review

With mild enthusiasm in my heart, I schlepped to Target last night to inspect Anna Sui's Gossip Girl-influenced designs for the mass retailer. Don't get me wrong, I do watch Gossip Girl, however, being well past high school and college, I was probably not the target demographic for this collection. With the intention of scooping up the Blair-inspired tablecloth dress (the one with the blue bow),

Kane's Killer Collection

Somewhere in my relentless internet search for photos and information on Christopher Kane's upcoming 39-piece collection for Topshop, I spied some lustworthy eyelet platforms. After seeing more of the lookbook on a Scandinavian blogger's site, it was official - I was intrigued, and couldn't get enough of the mesh and eyelet flourishes. When the complete lookbook and a short (but glitzy) video

Rare-ly Stylish

When I received this invite last week to the Rare A/W '09 press day on September 11 in London, my first reaction was a) to reprimand myself for not yet moving to London, and b) to take a closer at this affordable, Liverpool-based high street brand which I had seen at Topshop and know very little about. A quick peek at the website revealed an easy-to-navigate layout with my favorite feature, New

Rachel by Rachel Roy

You may of first been "introduced" to Rachel Roy through her husband, Roc-a-Fella co-founder Damon Dash, but these days her name has become synonymous with emerging fashion. The young, high profile New York designer has come a long way. Over the last couple of years her label has expanded and now offers a more affordable line appropriately titled, "Rachel, Rachel Roy." The likes of Joy Bryant, Padmi Lakshmi and even Michelle Obama wear her designs (probably from her original line Rachel Roy New York). But despite her star being on the rise, she's still a dedicated mother of two who hasn't lost sight of what's important. Posted below is "Behind the Lens" - the three part video series filmed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Douglas Keeve. In it Rachel Roy reflects on her past, present and future and there are plenty of cute scenes with her adorable daughters, Ava (9) and Tallulah Ruth (1). After you've checked out the videos visit www.rachelroy.com to view photos of her new and more economically friendly fashion line.

LeToya Luckett

LeToya attends LeToya's "Lady Love" album release party at Cain on August 27, 2009 in New York City.
LeToya Luckett proved to the world that there's life after Destiny's Child. At the release of her sophomore album, "Lady Love," LeToya wore a shimmering 'Illusion' fringe sequin dress by Haute Hippie. Follow in her footsteps by scrolling to the post below. If you want more sequined inspiration, check out these two old posts. Click here and here.

A long-sleeved dress will take you seamlessly from summer into fall. If you want to shorten it a little, like LeToya's, grap any skinny belt you have and hike the dress up. Tighten the belt then let the fold of the top half of the dress cover the belt. Finish the look with a metallic nail lacquer, but avoid something predictable like silver. Bronze or a dark gold will work wonders!

I Just Wanna Dischoe

Sequins and shoulder pads are two trends that I've been scouting at thrift stores lately. I just unearthed this Dynasty-esque top (which covers both trends and is worthy of an '80s-era disco party) for less than the price of a movie ticket. With similar sequin styles going for well over $100 at Topshop, I feel quite pleased with my new find, as it's in mint condition. I'm left wondering who owned

Zebra Dreams

If it weren't for the presence of my neighbors, I would've let out an exceedingly emphatic exclaim of "Ashish!" upon seeing a box from Arcadia Group on my doorstep today. Yes, my beloved Ashish for Topshop wedges finally arrived after a long week of anticipation and excitement. In typical fashion blogger style, I'm gushing about them to all my friends and now, to my readers. With six full inches

Best Boots Under $50 To Buy Now

Footwear seems to be a recurring theme here on Fashion Trend Guide, and as a self-professed shoe addict, I'm continuing my shoe devotion with more boot options for fall. Because I get questions from readers about where to buy affordable and trendy footwear, I challenged myself to find five up-to-date styles each under the $50 price point. (My picks are all things that I would buy if I had more

We're Ready For Our Close-Up...

The September cover of i-D magazine will feature the fashion world's best and brightest stars... four up-and-coming black models. In fact, let's give them their credit, they are no longer "up-and-coming." These ladies have ARRIVED! Chanel Iman, Sesilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Arlenis Sosa look nothing short of fabulous in this photo shoot. And if you don't believe me, take a sneak peak at the video below which features behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot. Naomi Campbell may still be forging ahead but these girls are bringing in the rear. On my cue everybody sing... "I want to love you, P.Y.T. Pretty Young Thing. You need some lovin'. T.L.C...."

P.S. Jourdan is supposedly pregnant, hence the strategic placement of Seslie's arm. Also peep the 1:03 minute mark in the video. Congrats Jourdan. You're repping for the U.K.!

Ashish, Ashish, Ashish

I'm not even on Twitter, but having stalked Topshop on Twitter, I found out that the Ashish wedges I've been lusting after would become available Wednesday, so I kept an eye out for them this evening. Given that Topshop headquarters is eight hours ahead of PST I theorized that the wedges would become available sometime around midnight, assuming the Brits start their workday at 8am. Fortunately,

Thigh High

If last fall's must-have footwear item was the ankle boot, this season's equivalent is the thigh high (or over-the-knee) boot. Eager to try out this trend, I've purchased two inexpensive pairs already - a flat pair in black faux leather, and a pair with a platform and 4" heel in black faux suede. After many hours of browsing various online stores to find the perfect pair, I've discovered a few

Whether you opt to wear faux leather or the real thing, there's something undeniably cool about fall's biker-inspired pieces. Put them on and you instantly feel strong, like you can harness the power of a superhero. The crew over at

Tui Leave in Conditioner, www.carolsdaughter.com

It used to be that the ultimate hairstyle statement for a woman was to shave your head bald (or close), but these days celebs have put their own twist on the avant-garde style. If your not sure that you, or your head shape, can pull off a completely shaved look, ease yourself into the style by going partially bald first. Cue Cassie Ventura, Lala Vasquez, Keyshia Cole, Raven Symone and the pioneer Kelis. They've all put their unique interpretation of the style by adding hair dye, patterns, track lines and even ultra girly curls on the side of the head still with hair.

If you're going to try this style be prepared. Stock up on bobby pins to stop your long sided hair from falling across the border. Also, invest in a good pomade to keep your shaved side neat and frizz free. As always, keep your hair healthy with a good conditioner like Carol's Daughter's Tui Leave-in and Creme of Nature's moisturizing shampoo. So come on ladies, do Grace Jones proud and get the clippers out!

In the spirit of adorning my various possessions with chains, I used two new toggle chain bracelets from Forever 21 to update my beloved old Alice + Olivia boots from Payless. As with my previous DIY boot chain mini-project, I took the easy road by using safety pins to attach the bracelets. Therefore, if I change my mind about adorning the boots with the chains, I can remove them easily and wear

Take a Leaf Out of Her Style Book: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana attends the 'Star Trek' Germany premiere on April 16, 2009 in Berlin, Germany.
Zoe Saldana arrives at Star Trek Los Angeles Premiere at the Graumans Chinese Theater in Hollywood CA on 4/30/2009.
Zoe Saldana sits front row at the Lela Rose Spring 09 Fashion Show
Zoe Saldana arrives for the UK Film Premiere of Star Trek at the Empire Leicester Square on April 20 2009 in London, England.
Zoe Saldana appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 6, 2009.

Zoe Saldana and her stylist have had a busy summer. With the release of her summer smash "Star Trek" the Dominican diva had to come hard (and correct) on the red carpet. Naturally, Zoe delivered. Her style is simple. Pick a dress that will shine in its own right. Whether its large bows or bouncy frills, Zoe's dresses have people running to the internet to find out what she wore. To wear a dress with this much punch, you need confidence. See below for ideas on where to get YOUR shine.

My Picks!

Whether it's a hot date, exclusive party or gala fundraiser, a head-turning dress is a fail-safe investment. All you need is one stand out detail to take an otherwise classic dress to a whole new level. Think oversized bows/flowers, excessive frills, sequins galore and voluminous shapes. Anything goes. Just be sure to pick a dress that flatters your shape. A-line dresses that cinch at the waist suit everyone.

Good Hair... The issue becomes public.

Trailer for Chris Rock's new docu-movie "Good Hair."
Yaya De Costa, Terri Seymour and Beyonce display some of the varying hair textures and styles in the black community.

Behind the scenes of the "Good Hair" movie poster photo shoot.

I cannot express how excited I am to see Chris Rock's new docu-movie "Good Hair" (out this October). This is long overdue... like 200 years! When I first saw the trailer I was unsure about how this was going to pan out. Will the movie really explore the hair issues in our community or will it be nothing more than a superficial mockery that just scratches the surface? I watched the trailer several times and concluded that Chris Rock is just trying to add some humor to a somewhat sensitive subject. I am confident the movie will be equally entertaining and informative.

That said, are we as black women ready to face the questions that will undoubtedly come from those outside our race. Movie critics at the Sundance Film Festival, where the movie won an award, lamented on how they had "no idea" that black women went through so much to "look good." I personally do not want nosy commuters asking me if my hair is a weave on the rush hour train to work! Either way, this will undoubtedly be a milestone in our history. The movie has a lot of money behind it and will me watched by millions. I just hope it lives up to the hype. I equally hope Chris Rock interviews some natural sistas in an effort to dispel the myth that natural hair is hard to maintain. Visit http://www.goodhairmovie.net/ for more information.
